ARTS AND CULTURAL BUILDING MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY
The extensive milestone project “New Student Precinct” for Melbourne University involved demolishing some buildings, constructing new, and refurbishment of some existing as well as landscaping. K5 Furniture worked with the talented team at Lyons over a 3 year period from design to installation. The selection of furniture needed to be a perfect compliment to the wonderful architecture in the new The Arts and Cultural Building, which houses the Guild Theatre and the Union theatre.
The feature furniture in the foyer on the second floor is the PHAZE armchairs designed by world renown designer Karim Rashid for Skandiform. The striking orange fabric of the chairs is stunning sitting on the carpet in the foyer of the light well. The carpet displays an incredible Indigenous artwork by Dr Ngardarb Riches a descendant and Elder of the Bardi Jawi and Karajarri from the West Kimberley. This space creates a great hub for students to gather before entering into the theatre space.
Positioned across the four levels of the building are the Segis CAMEL chairs and stools in teal green and orange creating a wonderful visual. The polypropylene seating is durable, comfortable and has a great aesthetic.
This project is extraordinary, and the students are very fortunate to be able to enjoy this amazing facility for quiet study or casual gatherings, as well as open function areas prior to performances in the theatre.
