The Return of Boyd

Boyd Collection, a K5 Furniture exclusive, reinterprets the designs of mid-century Australian architect, Robin Boyd. A furniture collection consisting of a sofa, lounge chair, coffee table and dining table as designed by Boyd for the Domain Park apartments and residence at Walsh Street, in Melbourne.

Robin Boyd, an Australian architect known for his advocacy of affordable and functional modernist homes, gained international recognition in the mid 20th century. He focused on the art of architecture and architectural discourse, highlighting the importance of rational planning, the use of available local materials and optimal building orientation. 

Walsh Street Sofa, a 3-seat modernist expression, made from solid Victoria ash and holding dynamic angles sat upon timber legs.

The Boyd Collection, is meticulously crafted from Australian hardwoods, adorned with Australian wool fabrics, and featuring cork tiles linoleum as the tabletop finish. This attention to detail and selection of materials imbues each piece with the inherent appeal of finely crafted furniture. By faithfully adhering to Robin Boyd’s original specifications and material choices, K5 Furniture strives to express the creativity and versatility of Boyd’s work.

A clean form represented in the Walsh Street dining table and coffee table, made of solid Victoria Ash and topped with a heat resistant natural cork.

A narrow sloping block at 290 Walsh Street, South Yarra, became the destination for the family home of Robin Boyd in 1958. Designing the building and the simple furnishings within, each piece is a study of timeless elegance and comfort, with an everyday use in mind.

K5 Furniture shares Boyd’s passion for local design and manufacturing, upholding values of durability, quality, environment, and recognising the beauty and functionality of Boyd’s crafted furniture. K5 Furniture collaborated with the Robin Boyd Foundation, to develop the Boyd collection of mid-century furniture pieces.

The Robin Boyd Foundation continues the work and spirit of Robin Boyd through an innovative series of public learning programs, developed to increase awareness, understanding and engagement with design. 

KFive Furniture actively supports the Robin Boyd Foundation with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of pieces in the Boyd Collection donated to the foundation. Additional furniture items will be released in 2023 as an extension to the Boyd Collection.

As a sister chair, the Domain Park chair, resembles one portion of the sofa, creating the perfect partnered pair in any situation.
