Balgownie Estate’s Journey of Renewal and Innovation
In 2020, Balgownie Estate faced a devastating fire that threatened the heart of its operations. However, with resilience and a commitment to excellence, the estate embarked on a remarkable journey of reconstruction, transforming challenges into opportunities to elevate guest experiences. Head of Operations Grant Flack shares insights on the estate's reimagined design, the influence of local culture, and the innovations shaping its future in hospitality.
Amidst the challenges of rebuilding, Balgownie Estate prioritised continuity by establishing a temporary marquee on its tennis court. This served as a welcoming space for guests to wine and dine while the main facilities underwent redevelopment. “It was key to ensure we rebuilt as quickly as possible,” says Grant Flack, Head of Operations at Balgownie Estate. “The accommodation rooms were not affected, so we wanted to give a hospitality offering to our guests right away.”
The new design closely mirrored the original footprint but incorporated elements that connected it more deeply to the local environment. With extensive use of glass to flood the space with natural light, and touches of wood for warmth, the updated facilities now integrate Reception, Cellar Door, Bar, and Restaurant into a cohesive, flowing layout. Symmetry and harmony became central to the design philosophy. “We wanted elements that tied the building into the local environment, creating a space that was comfortable, stylish, and modern but never brash,” explains Flack.
The reconstruction not only restored but reimagined the estate. Key changes included integrating the previously separate Reception team into the main flow of spaces, ensuring guests could transition seamlessly between areas. Features like wooden cladding and an open kitchen highlight the estate's dedication to openness and transparency. “The open kitchen really allows us to show off the team in a great way,” Flack adds. The redesign also unlocked the potential of the Deck, previously underutilised. A new roof extension now makes this space versatile and accessible nearly year-round, enhancing its appeal for guests.
In partnership with Bayley Ward Architects, the estate brought to life a vision that balanced style and comfort. Soft fabrics, thoughtful lighting, and cohesive tones created spaces that feel both modern and connected to the local landscape. “Their vision to create incredible spaces based on our collected ideas was amazing,” says Flack. “They brought it all to life while ensuring the cohesion of spaces and soft touches in fabrics, lighting, and tones really accentuated the look and feel we wanted.”
Sustainability played a significant role in the rebuild. From water catchment and treatment systems to sourcing local materials and furnishings, Balgownie Estate made environmentally conscious choices. This commitment reflects the estate’s dedication to being a responsible community partner. “Being a local community establishment, we wanted to ensure our footprint is sustainable and environmentally friendly,” notes Flack.
The estate continues to evolve its offerings to meet changing guest preferences. Casual, share-style dining has been introduced, appealing to groups and fostering a sense of connection. Regularly updating menus, bar packages, and amenities ensures that Balgownie Estate remains at the forefront of hospitality trends. “We’ve tweaked our offerings to allow for more casual dining experiences, embracing the sharing aspect of meals, which has been a fantastic enhancement,” says Flack.
The estate’s strong ties to the local community are evident in its menus, which feature regional produce, beers, and wines. Recent collaborations include commissioning a local artist to create bespoke artwork for revamped accommodation rooms, further embedding the estate within the local culture.
Rebuilding during the COVID-19 pandemic added layers of complexity, from navigating lockdown restrictions to maintaining team morale. Yet, Balgownie’s staff rose to the occasion, balancing the demands of ongoing operations with the long-term goal of creating a facility that would serve guests for decades to come. “Maintaining staffing levels, commitment, and excitement was hard during lockdowns, but the team did so well pulling together for the common goal,” Flack reflects.
Balgownie Estate has ambitious plans for the future, including expanding its function spaces and accommodation offerings by 2025. With a commitment to constant improvement, the estate aims to solidify its reputation as a premier destination where guests can wine, dine, stay, and relax.
Whether guests visit for a quick wine tasting, an indulgent spa retreat, or a celebratory dinner, Balgownie Estate ensures every moment is crafted to inspire return visits. By blending heritage with modernity, the estate honours its rich history while meeting the expectations of today’s guests.
Balgownie Estate’s journey after the fire is a testament to resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to hospitality excellence. With its beautifully reimagined facilities and dedication to community, sustainability, and guest experience, the estate continues to shine as a beacon of the Yarra Valley.
